Considering how little research is STILL not being done on menopause or women’s health in general, I find it both irritating and depressing that money & time is being spent on studying men’s experiences of something that 0% of them will experience firsthand. There are still not enough studies done on the benefits of testosterone for women because all the studies have been done on men. Until the work has been done for women - the people who actually are dealing with the day to day effects of perimenopause on our own bodies maybe we could not yet again be putting men’s feelings and concerns front and centre.
I agree with you that there is insufficient research being done on women’s health in general. I do believe the amount of research being done on menopause is improving and especially so over the past 3-5 years. I see 3-4 new studies coming out every week.
The MATE survey (the one I cited) is the only standalone study done on men’s attitudes and awareness of menopause. Without work like that we are guessing at the types of education to proved women and men that will close the gap between them.
This study also showed that men want to be involved so that they can better support the women in their lives.
Thank you Simon for such an interesting read… I really thoroughly enjoyed reading it as Im going through this phase right now and yes it’s difficult for both partners but somehow if you can open your heart to your partner and tell them exactly what’s truly going on physically and mentally you can get through this stage without feeling like it’s the end for you both But in saying that it’s tough and not as easy as Im writing right now as it definitely takes a toll on you and the relationship and not always easy to open up about this stage..
Thank you for taking the time to read it. Yes. I agree finding a way to open up to each other and let your partner know what is happening goes a long way to removing the tension that can build.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Engaging men in this conversation would be powerful and healing
I truly believe that. As men we definitely have to find ways to be supportive.
