When Talking Doesn’t Work
Navigating Midlife Communication
Have you noticed conversations that used to flow now feel tricky or tense? For me, sometimes I repeat myself, or I hold back because it seems easier. On some days, it feels like no words land the way I want them to.
I’ve found it often isn’t about the topic itself, but about timing or energy. Pausing, asking instead of advising, or just listening can make a bigger difference than I expected. Noticing the difference between these moments helps me show up differently next time. A coach I spoke with recently put it into words.
“When a solution cannot be found, the brain seeks a tangible cause for the unresolved threat. The most effective shift is not finding a better solution, but moving from problem-solving to support.”

Some conversations stick with me because they felt clear or easy, while others feel messy. It’s interesting how small adjustments, shifting tone, giving space, or just being present, can completely change how things land.
Have you noticed a moment where saying less or simply being present changed how a conversation unfolded?

Communication is challenging, even for me.
